Fazenda Nova Country House – Tavira

fazenda nova is a secluded luxury country house in the heart of the eastern Algarve, near the beautiful historic coastal town of tavira and stunning coastline and beaches.

the fazenda is an original portuguese country house that has been renovated to combine a modern style with traditional architecture and features.

formerly a family home and farm, it sits on ten hectares of land, with its own orchard, vegetable and herb gardens. in spring it is abundant with wild flowers growing among almond, carob and olive trees.

the cleverly-designed gardens were created by a noted local landscaper. simple and romantic, they surround the house and annexes. a series of paths lead you to undiscovered, wilder areas where you can reflect and relax and study the bird life. shady areas are perfect for settling down with a great book. the gardens are tranquil, calm and simply planted, and complement the house and its leisurely ambience.

the fazenda is welcoming all year round, with the prospect of blue skies even in winter.

a fazenda: location

fazenda nova is set in the heart of the eastern Algarve just fifteen minutes from the historic and beautiful town of tavira. thirty minutes from faro airport.

tavira sits on the river gilao with a plethora of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. in the centre by the roman bridge is an amphitheatre that hosts summer concerts and festivals. an attractive town with grand buildings, a central square, pretty gardens and places to sit.

the coastline falls within the ria formosa natural park, fabulous for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts. the estuary of the formosa forms a series of islands – farol, culatra, armona, tavira and fuseta – fabulous places to take a boat trip and just wile away the hours with island life.

there is so much to see and do in the area. all the towns and villages offer something different – the coastine is truly beautiful and worth exploring. olhao, fuseta, Santa Luzia, Santa Catarina are all special places to visit whether you want to head to the markets, up into the hills, take a stroll by the waterfront, a water taxi to the islands, or just sit with a beer or coffee and watch the world pass by.

step upstairs from the restaurant to the mezzanine library. sit back and relax with a book or simply enjoy the space. the library leads to the large outside terrace with views to the sea and back to the hills.

‘a cozinha’ is the fazenda’s restaurant. seasonal menus reflect the produce growing in the kitchen garden and orchard. menus will have a broadly iberian flavour, with some international favourites. fish is fantastic in this area – the nearby ria formosa is the major breeding ground for fish in the north atlantic and we are lucky to have the best fish market in the algarve at nearby olhao. portuguese and spanish meats (including iberia’s famous pata negra ham) are of the highest quality.

breakfast is served from 8.00 – 10.30am every morning either in the restaurant or on the terrace. on offer is an european breakfast of fresh fruit, freshly-baked breads, juices, pastries, cereals, cold meats and cheese. hot breakfasts available on request.

lunch includes light meals such as baguettes, wraps, salads along with meat and fish plates typical of the area.

picnics can be pre-booked the day before and any special requests for the basket will be accomodated.

we are most fortunate to have our own bread oven. more than 200 years old, it was preserved during the refurbishment. bread is cooked freshly every day and because the oven opens out onto the terrace, where the cooks can be seen at work, you may wake to the smell of baking bread. in the evenings the oven will be used for meat and fish dishes, with pizzas and the occasional hog roast.

clad in strips of reclaimed wood and concrete, the bar is the heart of the fazenda, set next to the reception and restaurant.

the bar is open day and night – whether you need a great coffee, fresh juice or light snack, head to the bar.

an honesty bar with some great and varied portuguese wines is operational late evening.

follow your way to the rear of the house through gardens of olives, lavender and rosemary to the infinity pool nestled into the landscape.

a large terraced deck welcomes you to settle on the sun loungers to relax the day away. when it gets too hot, take yourselves off to the olive trees and hit the hammocks.

there are so many beautiful beaches in the algarve, each stunning for different reasons. the nearest beach to the fazenda is baril/pedras de rei. just across the ria formosa, the beach can be accessed by a small train or a very pleasing walk through the nature reserve that takes ten minutes. from the sand dunes you can see the village of santa luzia and the salt flats of tavira, taking in the wildlife as you pass by.

ilha de tavira – just a short ferry ride from the salt flats of tavira. a pretty little island and gorgeous beach. step off the boat and follow the path past the campsite and restaurants. various watersports are offered here including jetskis, donuts, banana boats etc.

ilha de armona – catch the ferry or a water taxi from olhao and in under half an hour you can be transported back in time. the port is a hub of activity with restaurants and bars galore, small shops selling essentials and the local fisherman’s stall selling his catch of the day. relax into island life, enjoy the beaches and lagoon and laze the day away.
